Bakersfield Speedway, Bakersfield, CA
Dave Sanborn
by Ken Wagner.
Dave Sanborn lost his life in a racing incident at Ascot Speedway in 1990. He and wife Kathy were major race fans during their 21 year marriage, and started out as fans of Duane Feduska. When Feduska left TQ's to run Sprint cars, Dave and Kathy followed him on to Ascot. Dave wanted to get involved more so they joined the CRA in 1980. Two years later he went into the pits as he wanted to get out of the grandstands and help. By 1984 he became a fireman and worked very hard for the club.
In 1987 he became the fourth turn flagman and later switched to turn three. It was there that he met his untimely death, doing what he loved best. He loved racing and dreamed of owning his own sprint car someday, and even had a desire to drive one of the powerful machines.
He was a friendly, outgoing and happy guy, always willing to pitch in to help wherever needed. He was loved and respected by all those who knew him.
The Dave Sanborn Classic was run in his honor during the last days of the CRA.
