Krikke Cousins Killed in Tragic Road Accident

Western Australia's speedway community was rocked by the news that young Sprintcar stand-out Darryl Krikke and his cousin Jason Krikke died in a horror smash on their way home from Friday night's Claremont meeting. Darryl (21) and Jason (18) died when their car left the road, slammed into a tree and split in half near the country town of Myalup. The front section of the car came to rest 70 metres from the point of impact. Jason was throw from the car on impact, while Darryl was held in by his seatbelt. They were just 25km from their Bunbury homes.

Jason's father John Krikke has won the Western Australian Sprintcar championship 3 times, while Darryl's father Ron is a 2 time Australian champion as well as a 2 time Western Australian champion. Many had predicted that Darryl was destined to outshine his father's achievements.

The obviously distraught parents and friends visited the accident site the morning after the crash, to pay respects and try to comprehend what had happened. A devastated John Krikke said, "It's a shame to see two good boys go... especially like this."

Ron Krikke commented, "Darryl was going to be a great champion. We just can't believe that his life has been cut so short." He continued with a reminder for other parents, "Please, everybody, talk to your kids before they drive cars... I know we say it all the time, but you know, it doesn't hurt to say it one more time."

Claremont Speedway promoter Con Migro struggled to find the words to sum up the feelings of the speedway community. "It's a tragic loss... not only for speedway, but my thoughts are more with the Krikke family, because they are very prominent in the world of speedway, and they are a wonderful family."

Tributes have already streamed in from around Australia. Claremont Speedway will pay tribute to Darryl and Jason this Friday (March 14) at the running of the annual sprintcar King of Wings.
